MerlinLight: Our Approach to Art Lighting

Artwork can be the reason a wall becomes the focus of a room. When planning lighting, we recommend bringing that artwork into the conversation early—along with the furniture layout and the places from which it will be viewed.

At Malibu Wired, we regularly install Lutron lighting, including Rania and D2 fixtures. We are interested in solutions that give us more ways to respond to a particular interior, especially when a client has a piece they want to enjoy every day.

MerlinLight’s collaboration with Lutron is one of those possibilities. Its optical framing projectors are designed to shape light around selected artwork and objects, and its partnership page describes Ketra integration. MerlinLight and Lutron.

Start With the Artwork and the Room

Our recommendation is to look at the work itself, its placement, and the surrounding space before selecting a fixture.

How large is the piece? Is it behind glass? Where will someone stand or sit to view it? What other light will be present in the room?

We would want the lighting discussion to include those answers. They help define the effect the client is looking for and the questions the design team needs to resolve.

A photograph of the wall and the dimensions of the artwork make a useful starting point. For a new home, showing the intended location on the plans helps bring that discussion forward.

Understand What Framing Can Add

A framing projector offers a way to direct and shape light onto a selected subject. MerlinLight describes this as a central feature of its system. Explore MerlinLight.

For us, the interesting design question is whether that precision would improve the experience of a particular piece in a particular room. Some settings may call for a defined emphasis; others may benefit from a different lighting approach.

We would review the desired result alongside mounting conditions, viewing angles, and the surrounding lighting. The right recommendation depends on the complete setting.

Consider the Rest of the Evening Scene

Our Lutron work keeps us thinking about how different lighting layers relate to one another. Artwork is part of that relationship.

An art-focused scene should be considered alongside the light at the seating area, nearby decorative fixtures, and the room beyond. We recommend discussing the balance the client wants, rather than treating the artwork’s illumination as an isolated decision.

Window treatments can also be part of the conversation. We regularly install Lutron shades, and the changing daylight in a room belongs in the same planning process.

For sensitive works, the collection’s care requirements should guide exposure decisions with the appropriate specialist. We would not treat a fixture’s marketing description as a guarantee of preservation.
